Some people have a strong wanderlust, for me, it was eight months travel into various countries in Asia to explore its rich cultures.
It made me think, on New Year’s Eve in Singapore, when a friend who visited for a 3-week vacation asked, “where are you going this year? Well, I have to go back and save some more for next vacation.”
This hit hard as it made no sense to me; why do we have to work our whole lives and save money to travel, have a vacation that only lasts for a few days.
I hate being in a chair from 9-5. The happiest hours of my life are when I am around people traveling to new places, whether it is a sunny beach, a historical place, or even a cold desert.
I had no intentions of going back home to the same 9-5 routine; it made me think of different ways to earn while traveling, as well as, ways of budgeting in as clever ways as I can.
A small tip while on the subject of budgeting; always plan your stays carefully to be within the desired budget. You can find a place that’s within your budget for exemple here below.
I have met many people who earn and travel side by side. Myself, I have worked as a travel guide in Turkey; I often get asked how I got into that and I always reply: apply as a guide to the same company you have completed a trip with, it can increase the odds of you being hired.
You have to have good English skills as communication is always in English and they won’t reject an excellent English-speaking guide.
I have listed some travel-friendly jobs for you below. I hope you get inspired to do the same.
Take Photographs
Are you creative? If yes, creative professionals can earn quite a bit.
Professions like adventure photographers, storytellers, videographers, these professions can focus on their travels more. People in such professions travel allot more around the world as a result.
Note that, if you do become adventure photographer, it can be very demanding.
A company can hire you to produce a show on travels or sell out your photography and videography to various channels to earn money.
You will need a good equipment if you want high end jobs, unless you are focusing on social media like Instagram (influencers), then a phone with a good camera can be enough.
Write about your Travel
Travel blogs can be a really good source of income if done right. So if you are a good pen and know how to use social media, it can be well worth it.
I started blogging about my travel. Sharing stories of people I met on my trips and sharing travel information.
If you´re not up for setting up and managing your own blog, I highly recommend utilizing sites like Found My Spot and simply guest blog for them. Found My Spot for example, allows you to insert affiliated links into your article so you can make income. You can of course also write a guest post here to promote your blog, thereby, build valuable backlinks to your blog. Check it out!
On the other hand, if you are up for setting up and managing your own blog, these are the steps you need to take.
 It is important to choose an attractive name for your blog; it should be accessible to search, if possible, no more than 15 letters and memorable.
Next is choosing the hosting (don’t worry, you can buy the domain name with the hosting), you don’t want to go over your budget when starting your blog. You can choose any platform you like for the blog (I recommend WordPress), but make sure to have other platforms like, Youtube, Instagram and/or Facebook.
Blogging is a stream of income for many travelers. Travel blogging is complex and can take years to master, but travel blogging isn’t the only option.
You can choose any niche, like fashion blogging, food blogging you’re imagination is really the limit.
The income is generated by advertisement, marketing, affiliated marketing and so on. Sometimes, if you get really popular, you can make money through Youtube and/or become an influencer and get paid simply for mentioning things in your niche.
Get a job on a cruise ship
If you love the sea, you might consider working on a cruise ship. These kind of jobs are quite common and you shouldn’t have much problem finding one, but they can also be very difficult as there is allot that goes into a single cruise.
It doesn’t hurt if you already have your sea legs and perhaps an education as captain, engineers, medical staff, chef, etc. Having some skill or education can help you get that cruise job in a heart beat.
Modern cruise ships are like floating cities, incredible exiting and fun and you might see places but be prepared to spend allot of time on board and depending on the job you have, you won’t be leaving the ship when ever you like.
Teach a language
When I first visited Turkey, very few people could understand English, especially the eastern side of the country, but it was the most sought after skill.
It took me no time to find a job. I started working at a language academy, teaching English. Speaking English is the most sought-after skill globally, especially if you are a native English speaker.
It’s one of your most desired traits. While traveling, you can earn money by teaching English, but you will need a certificate to prove your English language skills. Apply to schools, academies, or you can give private classes.
Depending on where you are, teaching English might not be the only language worth teaching. Do a bit of research about the country you’re going to, you might have a language skill that is in demand in that specific country.
Make a career of it, become a Pilot
My little brother chose to be a pilot and when asked why, his answer was because he wants to fly and travel around the world.
Being a pilot you might be sent anywhere in the world for just a day and might reach home by the following evening, but you may also stay for a day or two between flights somewhere exotic giving you a chance to explore and satisfy that lingering wanderlust inside.
Be an Air host/ess
Like with the pilots, being an air host/ess can be a great job. It is though very demanding, the rewards can be worth it as this globetrotting lifestyle (if you can call it that) is part of every air host/ess.
Air host/esses can layover in exotic destinations. The airline company pays for the hotel and sometimes, they´ll get money to spend on food and other necessities, giving the air host/ess opportunity to really enjoy and explore their destination.
Work at an NGO as an International Aid worker
I have worked in an NGO and it was the most memorable experiences I have had. If you have passion and sense for social work, you can work as an aid worker in an international Non-governmental organization (NGO).
It can be very fulfilling and satisfying. Working with a NGO, it is possible to travel around the world (depending on the work you’re doing). Aid workers have to perform different roles like feeding the poor, awareness of different topics, counsel, provide health care, provide financial help and so on.
You can also volunteer in local NGO in the country you are visiting, in fact, you can travel from country to country and volunteer as most NOGs cover your costs while working for them.
Be self-employed (Freelance)
You can become a digital nomad/freelancer. All you will need is a laptop, software/other specialized equipment and some skills.
I have come across many travels that are working remotely as freelancers. Freelancing is location-independent, freelance work like graphic designers, Investment Advisor, website development, content writer, SEO, programming and so on.
Websites that can help to get clients are for example Upwork, Fiverr, Guru.
The fun part is you can be traveling in a low-cost country and do projects that pay high salaries, enabling you to travel in style.
If the 9-5 lifestyle doesn’t suite you, you’re imagination is the only thing standing in your way of finding that one project, lifestyle, career or what ever it is that allows you to roam more freely around the world.
